Thoughtful in execution, and timeless?

CHERYL JOHNSON

The following paintings are works on paper created with mixed media.
Oil, Acrylic, Oil Crayon.
Size: 14"x17"
Works are on Terra Stone Paper.
TerraSkin is a combination of mineral powder (>75%) and a small quantity (<25%) of non-toxic resin combined to create an environmentally friendly paper.
The production of TerraSkin requires no water, so the TerraSkin papermaking process incurs no water pollutants.
Used TerraSkin paper will start to degrade under the proper environmental conditions of high heat, moisture and UV light.
Most importantly, in producing TerraSkin, the harvesting of trees is unnecessary, thereby safeguarding the natural environment’s beauty and biodiversity for all living beings.
Sun-kissed
“It still is, really, a bit of a land that time forgot,” this beautiful verdant land of Kauai. Hawaii is a magical state made up of verdant valleys, sun-kissed beaches, tropical forests. Daily I am inspired to create.  The Hawaiians celebrate the land and cherish its abundance.  The colors of the island change with-the continual passing clouds. the inspiration for this painting comes from driving past beautiful gardens and orchards all filled with green and yellow and bright colors mingling.

Works of art on paper, including mixed media, acrylics, watercolors, prints, drawings, posters, pastels, oil crayon, charcoal, and gouache. Work may include—cut and pasted papers, photos, newspaper, magazine images or text, graphite, and touches of black and gray wash. I employ media specifically to evoke, rather than mimic, physicality, weight, touch, and time. √ My emphasis is on the balance between linear elements and luminous areas of color. I use elements of collage to add lyricism while maintaining structure.
This small, focused selection of works on paper offer an intimate glimpse of my abstract interpretation of my surroundings and environment.

Two Faces with Colorful Feelings
I choose to create abstract - paintings because I find the creative process exciting, intriguing, honest and satisfying. I love exploration and new ideas. I am constantly exploring new territory. A single mark or line on a blank surface provides a starting point for an intuitive exploration of the visual language found in abstraction. Working in mixed media: graphite, acrylic, pastel and oil crayon allows me to layer and rework textured surfaces - with each painting resulting in a delightful discovery of things unseen. This work is about my continual search for self and my desire to reach across the boundaries of time and place and inspire or relate with another person. This is a colorful piece that will hopefully, make a statement in any room. I am finding you finding me.

Wonderful finds at the oceans edge
In my Wonderment series I recall places I've been or dream of places I want to go. The colors in this piece reminds me of my trips to the ocean where the tide swirls in and changes colors on the rocks. Every shape and color is found in the ocean. I love the bright colors of the sea. The air is filled with mist and the sky hangs gently above. Shells and driftwood float in along with spectacular finds like a fishing bouy. perhaps tomorrow I will find a bottle with a genie or a rare treasure floating by. I wonder.

Inscape

A painting for me begins with a feeling or emotion. I first look inward and then to my surroundings gor inspiration. Gerard Manley Hopkins invented the word “inscape” to denote intrinsic form, the pattern of essential characteristics both in single objects and (what is more interesting) in objects in a state of relation to each other, and the word “instress” to denote the experiencing of the perception of inscape, the apperception of inscape.

Orbs of Passion
On an oceans shore near fertile field sheltered by clear sky, I kneel and close my eyes.  I raise my hands and say the words out loud - "Thank you Lord for all that you have given me and thank you above all for giving me the key to unlock the passions in my life."  I hear the words back, "Always follow your passion and your life will be filled with love and happiness."  I open my eyes and I see the coloreful orbs every where around me.  I smile with joy and....wonder how to paint the light.
I wake up only to realize it was a dream but it felt so real.  In fact, it was real because the message was so clear and it is true, I am blessed to be following my passions.

Fly Away

Make sure you look up and let your spirit soar. the Title of this work is flying away as my studio is located in a tree house home and i see birds in the valley and clouds swirling by caught by the sun light.
I was watching the night sky in the early evening and this painting was the resulting impression. The work is painted on paper. i enjoy this surface.

Sensuality and sexuality
I find the color red sensual. In fact it is just real sexy. When you add fuscia and play with shape, it is over the top. I love color and the many ways they bump and collide and play with one another. Is it not wonderful to add a painting filled with sensuous color to your home or office. Red intrigues the eye, invigorates the spirit and makes life evervescent.
