Angels at play
When I was a little girl my mother told me that God lets angels paint the sky and decorate the forests. Imagine what a fun job that would be.  Now the clouds and tropical forests and of course angels inspire me to paint and play and let colors dance together. This painting was created on a day when my paints flew onto the paper and mingled together playfully.  Abstract expressionist paintings open up the viewers world to new imaginings.

Memories. Dancing
Like succulent fruit savored, memories are cherished. Memory is our past and future. "Our memory is our coherence," wrote the surrealist Spanish-born film-maker, Luis Buñuel, "our reason, our feeling, even our action." Lose your memory and you lose a basic connection with who you are. paintings have a way of sparking our memory. They remind us of a place, time or moment.
It's no surprise, then, that there is a fascination with this quintessentially human ability. When I cast back to an event from my past – let's say the first time I ever swam backstroke unaided in the sea – I don't just conjure up dates and times and places (what psychologists call "semantic memory"). I do much more than that. I am somehow able to reconstruct the moment in some of its sensory detail, and relive it, as it were, from the inside. I am back there, amid the sights and sounds and seaside smells. I am wet, looking Up and feeling the sky, the sea. I become a time traveller who can return to the present as soon as the demands of "now" intervene. This Painting is a memory of the way colors dance upon the water.

Building a painting is like creating a building or an architectural structure. It starts from the idea, plan, foundation, inside, and works out. Developing a relationship with a painting, like a friendship, starts from the outside and works in. In creating this painting I started with water. I wanted to capture every part of the process of seeing and touching water so that when my final composition was done it included every trace and erasure made while creating an unreadable language. I wanted the painting to become free and to live beyond the starting point. It is like when you slip into the water and hear her voice whispering wet words in your ears: slush, drip, splash, glisten, glide, float. What water words come to your mind? Perhaps in viewing this painting you will be reminded of the beauty of water in some way.

Suddenly
Suddenly Admiring Joan Mitchell N°20181101 Painting by Cheryl Johnson 36 x 48 Painting: Oil, Acrylics, Latex and Oil Crayon on Canvas. I have always had a love affair with Joan Mitchell and this is the second painting where I emulated her style. What a joy to simply use energy to paint. Joan Mitchell is known for the compositional rhythms, bold coloration, and sweeping gestural brushstrokes of her large and often multi-paneled paintings. Inspired by landscape, nature, and poetry, her intent was not to create a recognizable image but to convey emotions. This painting was inspired by Joan Mitchell. I love to explore technique and style and enlarge my skills. The paintings that I create are meant to bring you joy, and pleasure. I hope they inspire and uplift, as well as enhance your interiors. I believe that our homes should be sanctuaries that surrounds us with comfort, color, beauty and the things we love. I loved creating the colors and brush work in this work. I hope you feel an emotional connection to this work, or perhaps LOVE Joan Mitchell like I do. I hope this painting makes you feel good, then I've accomplished what I set out to do. Hopefully, you'll want this painting in your home or office! Or maybe you're considering this artwork for a special gift. This one is hard to part with today! Thank you Joan!
